About us

Our History

Originally founded in 1904 by brothers George and Stephen Case in Biloxi, MS, Case Brothers began as a partnership to tune and repair pianos and reed organs. Searching for a larger customer base, the brothers moved Case Brothers to northern Spartanburg County, SC, in 1911, the beginning of Case Brothers' long commitment to the communities of upstate SC and western NC. They continued working successfully together until the late 1920's when the first George Case was tragically killed by a train. Stephen Case moved to Tennessee with most of his family, leaving his three oldest children, Aaron Case, George Case (named for his uncle) and Russell Case.

The younger George Case became the piano tuner and technician for several colleges and universities in Spartanburg, most notably Converse College and Wofford College. In addition, George Case tuned, repaired and marketed pianos out of his home up until 1934. Having acquired the Baldwin piano agency, he opened a retail showroom at the corner of St. John Street and Church Street.

Goerge Case's retail showroom became a thriving business. But, in the winter of 1943, his showroom burned, leaving only a shell of the original business. Because many businesses had been converted to the war effort, Case had only limited pianos from manufacturers to sell. George began regular forays to Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York to purchase older instruments to restore, once again marketing the instruments out of his home.

George began building a new store at the corner of Main Street and Pine Street, completed about 1948. Four years later, he sold the property to purchase the old Maxwell estate. A large two story home with solid brick walls, the Maxwell Estate housed George and his family upstairs and his piano showrooms on the main floor. In 1954, a large showroom was added, thus completing the beautiful 10,000 square foot complex which is Case Brothers today.

In 1999, Thomas E. Case became President of Case Brothers marking the 5th generation of the Case family in the music business.

Over the past century, Case has been privileged to work with many superb piano and organ makers including Baldwin & Yamaha. In 1959, we established a valuable and fruitful relationship with Jerome Markowitz and the Allen Organ Company. That fine relationship continues to this day. In 1983, we began a working partnership with Steinway and Sons that also continues today.

The Case family has always been passionate about fine pianos and organs. We have been privileged to sell, service and restore them for over a century. Our commitment to these fine instruments is matched by our commitment to our customers. We work closely with our customers to fulfill their long term musical needs.
